Hematite or haematite, meaning 'blood' (red) stone, is mainly made of oxygen and iron. As a consequence it has rust-red or reddish brown streaks, is very heavy and is always slightly magnetic. The mineral is found in standing water or created by volcanic activity and is brittle. It is that last aspect that made it into the important pigment 'red ochre'.
As a result almost all hematite beads are reconstituted creations of the mineral. Heat and impurities heighten the strength of its magnetism to make magnetic hematite. The metalized versions make great spacers, while the metallic silvery black luster of hematite looks great with dune beads' faceted glass beads!
Hematite, in combination with rock crystal, is known as a grounding stone and good for meditation. Its reflective nature is believed to amplify emotions: so be optimistic and it will enhance it.
Funny fact: hematite is responsible for the distinctive red color of the planet Mars.
