Lapis-lazuli was considered the sapphire of the ancient world. It is an opaque semi-precious stone of a deep celestial blue color flecked with fool's gold (pyrite). It used to be ground in ultramarine blue, a paint pigment that was among Michelangelo's favourites. It contains primarily lazurite, white calcite and specks of pyrite. The less calcite it contains, the more valuable it is.
Sodalite is an opaque celestial blue mineral that is sometimes confused with lapis. Vast deposits of it are found in Ontario, Canada. Here at dune beadswe feel it is nature's Delftware.
It is said to harmonize the inner being because it calms the mind, allowing logic and intuition to work hand and hand.
